DetailsTitle: USGS Maps Virginia's Underground Faults Description: A Cessna Grand Caravan airplane took measurements over Virginia's Louisa, Goochland and Fluvanna counties. The data collected will help USGS scientists locate buried geologic features associated with the August 23, 2011 earthquake and its aftershocks. Surveys were conducted from 7/15- 7/25. The instruments in the airplane recorded Earth's gravitational and magnetic fields as well as natural background radioactivity. Gravity and magnetic data can be analyzed to locate faults up to several miles underground. Location: Louisa County, VA, USA Date Taken: 07/2012 Photographer: David Daniels , U.S. Geological Survey Usage: This image is public domain/of free use unless otherwise stated.
