]]> <![CDATA[Simulation Improves Estimation]]> http://gallery.usgs.gov/videos/636 Using a simulated population to evaluate survey design and analysis: a case study with Great Lakes fish. Simulation is a useful tool for investigating the performance of a variety of statistical methods. A simulated population can provide valuable insight into the design and analysis of a survey, and may be employed in a wide range of applications. In addition, the process of defining a simulated population can bridge important gaps in understanding between the statisticians and technical experts involved. I present an example of a simulated fish population used to evaluate different methods of combining concomitant hydroacoustic and midwater trawl surveys. I worked with fisheries researchers to develop a fish community simulator that populates an artificial lake with known numbers of fish. The population was sampled by virtual hydroacoustic and midwater trawl surveys, and the methods used to combine the surveys were evaluated by comparing the resulting estimates to the known values. This video was presented as an electronic poster at the American Statistical Association's Conference on Statistical Practice.

]]> <![CDATA[2012 IMIA Town Hall Session]]> http://gallery.usgs.gov/videos/617 The U.S. Geological Survey’s National Geospatial Program (NGP) was a significant participant in this yea’s International Map Industry Association (IMIA) Americas Conference, September 9-11, 2012, Albuquerque, NM. Among the presentations and events was the Town Hall Session, titled: “Emerging Trends in Government”. The focus of this session was changing government business models related to geospatial information in the areas of data availability, information access, and dissemination. This interactive forum linked experience and knowledge to trends and issues facing government mapping organizations, the changing role of government, how they are evolving to e-commerce, changing from paper map inventory to digital products, and distribution via the Internet. This session was presented as a Town Hall Session to promote active participation and dialogue between the government panel members and the audience. The Panel was moderated by Ron Lofton of the NGP and included representatives from the following Federal agencies:
  • • Robert Morris, Library of Congress;
  • • Michael Cooley, U.S. Geological Survey (USGS);
  • • Connie Beard, U.S. Census Bureau;
  • • William Krausmann, U.S. Forest Service (USFS);
  • • and John Hannah, Bureau of Land Management (BLM).

]]> <![CDATA[Raven RQ-11A sUAS: USGS Training Exercise]]> http://gallery.usgs.gov/videos/403 U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) biologist Leanne Hanson narrates this video showing how the Raven-A small unmanned aircraft system, also called an sUAS or simply a drone, works in the field and what it “sees” from the air. In the first application of the Raven A system to a natural resource management need, the USGS and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service are testing the Raven A to see if it will be an effective means of conducting aerial counts of migrating sandhill cranes. This video gives an idea of how the Raven-A system could be applied in natural resources research. The video was produced by the USGS Unmanned Aircraft Systems Project Office during training exercises at the U.S. Army’s Dugway Proving Grounds in Utah in 2009.
