(Upbeat music)
John Calder: Our equipment. As you guys can see we have it on the tarp and that’s where we like to keep stuff. With the parking lot and the gravel and what not it’s going to tear stuff. We’ll give them a few minutes.

John: Myself and Patrick will be your lead instructors today.

Patrick Sullivan: Stop right at the water line.

Group: Overlapping conversation

Patrick: Remember, don’t, don’t completely unlink yourselves because if there’s any current, guess what’s going to happen?

Group: Laughter

Patrick: So, we need to be sure that as we’re doing all of our motions in the water that we’re staying connected to everybody at all times. Ok?

John: (mixed voices)….for right now just leave them kind of loose.

John: You guys ready to get back in the drink?

Woman: Yup!

John: Alright. Let’s make our way down there.

Group: Overlapping conversation

Brian: Come on kick like your life depended on it! Because it does!

John: Does everyone have thier immersion suit?

Woman: Yup

Tuck Brouhard: practice getting in and out of the basket

Group: Overlapping voices

Woman: OK

John: Nice

Tuck: practice getting in and out of the basket and then when you’re done with that up to the top turn your suits inside out one hundred percent.

John: Have you guys ever been on a hoist beneath a helicopter?

John: Nobody? Until you get down into the center of the eye, it’s hard, it’s hard to do it. This thing’s going to be coming down and the basket is swinging …..

Dog: Barks

John: Does that make sense…..it’s pretty simple. Just pull it over your head …

Dog: Barks

John: Spread your arms and legs like this and it will help …

Patrick: That’s what they’re bringing, they’re bringing that basket they’re bringing that strop.

Patrick: You’re having your survival experience you’re having that marine experience out in the water

Dog: Bark

Patrick: When they come and get you, when rescue comes to find you….

Title: Cold Water Survival

Description:

In preparation for marine work in the cold waters off Alaska professionals from academia, industry and government must, every few years, take an offshore survival class to increase their chances of survival in the event of a seafaring mishap. This short video is a brief look at the non-classroom portion of an offshore cold water survival class taught by Learn to Return Survival Systems, Inc. of Anchorage, Alaska. USGS video producer Stephen M. Wessells recorded the footage while attending the class. Time Lapse video is used to compress much of the action into quicker segments that illustrate some of the strategies used for signaling and survival.
